WINTER
Commencement

Journalist Neal Shine, who retired this December as publisher and president of the Detroit Free Press, and historian Hayden White, the University Professor and Professor of History of Consciousness (Emeritus) at the University of California at Santa Cruz, received honorary degrees at U-M's winter commencement Dec. 17, when approximately 2,000 students on the Ann Arbor campus graduated in a Crisler Arena ceremony.
President James J. Duderstadt, the honorary degree recipients, student-speaker Mary Ann Peterson '95 of Morenci, Michigan, and Thomas A. Roach, president of the U-M Alumni Association, spoke at the event.
Shine, who won a staff Pulitzer Prize for directing Free Press coverage of the 1967 Detroit riot, received an honorary doctor of humane letters degree.
White is recognized for his scholarly work to unite historiography and literary criticism into a broader reflection on narrative and cultural understanding. He, too, received an honorary doctor of humane letters from the U-M.
