Nearly two years after giving the spring 2010 commencement address, President Barack Obama returned to the University of Michigan for the second time during his administration. He delivered his remarks Friday, Jan. 27 to thousands of students, elected officials and guests at Al Glick Field House. He discussed education goals and college costs as the White House pushes education and training proposals.

Interesting timing, as I heard what follows on the radio, right after receiving this U of M news:
The founder of StudentLoanJustice.Org, Alan Collinge, talked about a report that student loans are draining parents\’ retirement accounts, and how the lifetime default rate on the loans is greater than 1 in 3. He argued that student loans should have standard bankruptcy protection, and this would actually help keep tuition inflation down. When asked about a hypothetical situation; if there were no Federal Loans, what would happen?  His opinion is that without the Feds, about 40% of the colleges would close (especially the for profit schools), and that the cost of a college education would drop about 30-40%
