Certainly a coterie of excellent communicators as a core of any modern orchestra will become axiomatic–however some will never be capable and forcing the issue will cause more damage than help. I would think the key lies in what the LA Phil is doing per validating the culture and the thrill of great orchestras by galvanizing young people as musicians and fans, if you will. Not enough attention has been paid to the experience of great sonorities and too many lovers of classical music are wimping out when it comes to spreading the news.
