Being an Ann Arbor resident, I appreciate being able to see what is inside the structure that I drive by from time to time. I’m glad to see it is so useful to the students and faculty and appears to be a beautiful space.
I am so happy that law students have a new social area. In lieu of Pres. Coleman’s talk about the huge cost of Universities, I say”was this really necessary?” another new space to heat, clean, mainitain.Lucky law students–not so lucky students struggling to make ends meet. Susan Giffin campbell ’54
@Susan Campbell:
As a (fairly) recent law grad, I can say: it was necessary. Very necessary. Not only will the Commons help recruitment, informal study space within the quad was at an absolute premium.
As someone who lived in the Martha Cook Building and walked through the Law Quad often, I’m sad to see the outdoor space go. 🙁 However, I understand that the Law school needs to stay competitive, and I’m glad they were able to preserve the beautiful existing architecture.
I am truly sorry at the loss of the quadrangle and the green space. What was once a place of a small bit of peace and quiet is now plastic. Just where does one go to find a place for reflection. The beauty which once was there is now dead. The trees and quadrangle of green are now gone. My daughter teaches at Cambridge. I sent this to her and she was aghast.
The idea of closing in one of the colleges green space was wrenching. Well, just cut down Newton’s tree and put in a Starbucks.
I would have hoped that a student space could have been somehow put under the quadrangle. Yes, I know it means money. I just see this as sad. tom
AS A GRADUATE OF THE ARCHITECTURE & DESIGN SCHOOL…BOTH UNDERGRADUATE & GRADUATE SCHOOL…& A FORMER RESIDENT OF MARTHA COOK…I’M VERY IMPRESSED WITH THE WAY THE ARCHITECTS KEPT A FEELING OF HISTORY…WHILE REUSING AN EXISTING SPACE TO ENHANCE THE LAW SCHOOL EXPERIENCE IN THE TWENTY FIRST CENTURY!
A beautiful and elegantly simple space.
I love the graceful yet subtle detail and the overall open and inviting nature of the space. It is obviously a very welcoming and useful space for all. Well done!
