Interesting timing, as I heard what follows on the radio, right after receiving this U of M news:
The founder of StudentLoanJustice.Org, Alan Collinge, talked about a report that student loans are draining parents\’ retirement accounts, and how the lifetime default rate on the loans is greater than 1 in 3. He argued that student loans should have standard bankruptcy protection, and this would actually help keep tuition inflation down. When asked about a hypothetical situation; if there were no Federal Loans, what would happen? His opinion is that without the Feds, about 40% of the colleges would close (especially the for profit schools), and that the cost of a college education would drop about 30-40%
