Girls Rock Detroit
This nonprofit promotes creative expression, positive selfesteem, and community awareness in young girls, ages 8-14, through a weeklong summer camp focused on music education and performance. Participants receive instrument lessons, form bands, and perform their own music in a Detroit venue. The organization provides a safe, positive, and accessible space by offering sliding-scale tuition. More

Elegus Technologies
This venture is commercializing lithium-ion battery technology based on Kevlar, the material found in bulletproof vests. The technology enables safer, longer-lasting batteries, ideal for use in electric vehicles and consumer electronics. The goal is to increase the energy density of batteries, and even shrink them. This social enterprise reallocates excess, unused medical supplies (that would otherwise be discarded from U.S. hospitals and suppliers) to organizations overseas that have a shortage of these same supplies. More

Launched in 2011, the organization has served more than 200,000 meals, which cost between $3-$5. Founder Noam Kimmelman also leads Detroit Food Academy, a program to train high school students to start their own food businesses. More

This enthusiastic group created a platform that helps vulnerable populations stay out of hospitals and on a healthy path. This mobile app optimizes the workflow of Community Health Workers (CHWs), who are critical in patient care coordination. The app helps improve communication, tracking, and triaging. By helping CHWs become more efficient, Confluent Care helps the hospitals, insurance companies, and nonprofits that employ them save time and money. More

Movellus Circuits
As the connected car market becomes a reality, the number of embedded processors in each vehicle is expected to increase. (Some vehicles already have as many as 100.) Each embedded processor requires a stable clock signal, which is an external component on the printed circuit board. The size, weight, power, and cost of the chip must be considered in the vehicle design. Movellus Circuits is designing lower-power, small-form, and low-cost electronics for clock generators. More

This sustainable aquafeed company produces a low-cost, commercial-grade product ideal for smallscale aquaculture farmers in Kenya. Kulisha has the potential to increase farmers’ yields — and profitability — while supplying healthy animal protein to people in the region, diverting waste from landfills, and reducing greenhouse gas emissions. The Michigan Urban Farming Initiative uses urban agriculture to promote education, sustainability, and community. Since summer 2012, MUFI has brought together thousands of volunteers and harvested 50,000 pounds of organic produce, approximately 35 percent of which went directly to individual households in Detroit’s North End community.
