The University Musical Society has hosted countless artists since its founding in 1879. Here is just a sampling of images, reflecting the society’s amazing history, which is part of the growing digital archive umsrewind.org. (The images showcased here are courtesy of UMS.)

  • Soprano and friends

    Backstage at soprano Joan Sutherland’s January 1970 performance are actress Helen Hayes, pianist Richard Bonynge, Sutherland, Gloria Hatrick McLean, and UMS President Gail Rector.

  • Standing ovation

    Mezzo-soprano Cecilia Bartoli and pianist Martin Katz receive a standing ovation at her UMS debut, April 10, 1993.

  • Warming to the idea

    Glenn Gould warms up in the basement of Hill Auditorium before his 1958 May Festival UMS debut.

  • Merce Cunningham and John Cage

    “How to Pass, Kick, Fall, and Run” was choreographed by Cunningham and accompanied by spoken text by Cage. This image was taken April 13, 1971.

  • Dressing room

    Leonard Bernstein conducted the Vienna Philharmonic in celebration of his 70th birthday and Hill Auditorium’s 75th anniversary on October 29, 1988.

  • Benny Goodman and his Big Band

    This was one of Goodman’s last performances on March 22, 1986.

  • Stage presence

    Vladimir Horowitz and his wife, Wanda Toscanini, walk the stage with UMS President Gail Rector in preparation for Horowitz’s 10th UMS piano recital on April 20, 1975.

  • Igor Stravinsky and Lester McCoy

    This contact sheet shows several images of composer/conductor Igor Stravinsky and Choral Union director Lester McCoy as they look over the score to Stravinsky’s melodrama “Persephone” in rehearsals for the 1964 May Festival.

    Cellist Yo-Yo Ma sits on the Hill Auditorium stage and autographs concert programs for youth from the Saline schools after his January 10, 1991, concert.

  • Leontyne Price meets Aida

    American soprano Leontyne Price performed her first career “Aïda” with the Philadelphia Orchestra at the Ann Arbor May Festival in 1957. Price would define the role for years to come.
