It would be no surprise to find scholars at the University of Michigan School of Music, Theatre & Dance whistling “Nice Work If You Can Get It” these days. One of the many sparkling songs written by George and Ira Gershwin, it is emblematic of the clever lyrics and catchy tunes penned by the legendary songwriting brothers whose body of work is now undergoing the most extensive scholarly review in history by SMTD students and faculty. Professor David Sherman explores biochemical pathways of marine microorganisms with the goal of finding new drug candidates to treat infectious diseases and cancers. To collect the samples he needs for his work, he often trades his lab coat for a wet suit and travels to exotic locations rich in biodiversity resources. Sherman is a faculty member in the Life Sciences Institute (LSI). He also is the Hans W. Vahlteich Professor of Medicinal Chemistry and associate dean for research and graduate education in the College of Pharmacy. (Text by Laura Williams.)
