In the video below, President Santa J. Ono shares his aspirations for the new year and invites the community to join him in nurturing a University culture that encourages everyone to “live up to their highest ideals and best traditions.”

The video continues with President Ono’s monthly “Portrait of a Wolverine.” Here, he celebrates the work of the dedicated staff at Michigan Medicine who “epitomize the dedication, determination, excellence, and self-sacrifice that are also in our highest traditions.” Reflecting on the pandemic, Ono reminds us of the grueling schedules and significant risks the team at Michigan Medicine endured while caring for this community. “They may have felt invisible at times, but their value was inestimable,” he says.

SANTA J. ONO is the University of Michigan's 15th president. He has served as president and vice chancellor of the University of British Columbia since 2016. Before that, he was provost and then president of the University of Cincinnati. He holds a bachelor’s degree in biological science at the University of Chicago and a doctorate in experimental medicine from McGill University in Montreal. Ono has taught at Johns Hopkins University, Harvard University, and University College London.
